Hiking village and herbal knowledge
Unken, the gateway to Pinzgau, opens up completely new views of the Salzburger Saalachtal and welcomes its guests with a breath-taking panorama. But this hiking village with around 2000 residents doesn’t only have a lot to offer visually. Anyone who wants to take a look at the history of the region should most definitely visit the imposing Kniepass fortress and its museum while you can learn about farm life in the olden days at the Kalchofengut. Travelling to the region via the “kleines deutsches eck“, the building with the inscription TEH® right at the Steinpass, the former border crossing point, catches the eye. TEH stands for “Traditionelle Europäische Heilkunde“, or “Traditional European Medicine“ and the association of the same name has its headquarters in the former customs’ house. Here you can learn interesting facts about this form of healing and the resident academy as well as buy herbal products, craft items and presents for various occasions to take home. Leaving the village centre of Unken to the north you reach the idyllic Heutal after a short ride by car or e-mountain bike.
